Infertility diagnosis through Ultrasonography under field condition by ICAR-NOFRI
Infertility is the major problem in dairy animals inhibiting the productivity and life time production of the dairy animals. Dairy farming is quite a profitable and remunerative enterprise providing livelihood and employment avenues to rural unemployed youth in addition to bulk manure to sustain organic agricultural production of the State. Mr. Baichung Bhutia, a small scale dairy farmer of Phodong, North Sikkim rearing 40 cows was experiencing various problems like prolong inter-calving interval, repeat breeding etc. and subsequently reducing his farm production. As a part of advanced training on ultrasonography, Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR- National Organic Farming Research Institute gave suggestions to put the ultrasonography on practice under field condition so that the real stakeholder get the benefit of the diagnostic tool. Therefore, training coordinator Dr. Brijesh Kumar, along with participants which included 12 nos. Veterinarians went to Phodong, screened more than 35 cows through ultrasonography and suggested the suitable treatments. Each participant performed the ultrasonography to different dairy animals individually and expressed their satisfaction. Further, it was felt that such kind of advanced diagnostic tools played an important role in the diagnosis of reproductive disorders in large animals under field condition. Dewormers, mineral mixtures and other feed supplements were also distributed to different tribal farmers under Tribal Sub Plan.
It was observed that there was lack of efficient recycling of dung and urine and suggestions were made for vermicomposting, provision for night urine collection and harvesting of roof top water to boost agricultural production in order to curb winter water scarcity.
